Summary:

This is an excellent book covering a wide range of topics that every young man will face as he matures into manhood.  There are questions throughout each chapter for self-reflection (for individuals or for group discussion) and a challenge at each chapter's end for practical application—such as making a commitment to be a man of integrity or taking an "inventory" of spiritual and natural gifting.

The book is divided into five sections:  becoming a man; life direction (finding identity and purpose); exploring Christianity; developing healthy relationships; and acquiring life skills.  It includes many practical application points such as steps for making decisions and answers to sensitive sexual questions. One of the most interesting parts of the book is the author’s discussion of the three things all men want—purpose, relationship and a belief system that helps make sense of the world—and guidance for how to seek after them. The book ends with a discussion leader's guide to facilitate group study.

Why does FASTEN recommend this resource?

This book is practical, easy to read, and does not talk "down" to teens.  It consistently gives teens tools to help apply the principles it presents. Written from a faith based (Christian) perspective, it would nonetheless be applicable to any young man.  This book speaks candidly to the issues and questions teens are actually wrestling with, not just the issues adults think that teens should consider.
