YET Center Programs

YET (Youth Education for Tomorrow) Centers are part of the Community-Serving Ministries program of Public/Private Ventures, a non-profit organization.  Funded by Pew Charitable Trusts and the city of Philadelphia, YET Centers provide daily, non-religious literacy instruction in faith-based organizations whose leaders and members are committed to helping develop programs to promote brighter futures for residents.

The YET Center program consists of five areas of focus:

  • Reading to students, based on grade-appropriate reading and author lists compiled by the Center.
  • Oral language activities designed to connect reading and writing to the outside world and build vocabulary.

  • Writing activities that work in conjunction with reading and oral language exercises.

  • "Word Works"activities to aid students in letter recognition, sight-word vocabulary, word attack skills and reading comprehension.

  • The "Hundred-Book Challenge" basic reading program.

The corresponding YET Center Handbook provides suggestions and techniques for implementing each aspect of the program. Contents of the Handbook include:

  • An appendix with forms such as lesson planners as well as sample lesson.

  • Read-aloud book and author lists by grade level.

  • Instruction about how to implement the YET Center's approach to teaching writing skills.

  • Information regarding the administration of informal reading inventories.

  • Easy-reference guide to use during testing.

Purposes, procedures and worksheets necessary for administering the Jerry Johns Basic Reading Inventory.  The Centers are required to enroll and retain 25 students, who are instructed by a certified teacher and an assistant.  All staff and volunteers are required to undergo training involving intake and assessment procedures; techniques for enhancing oral language/vocabulary, decoding, comprehension and oral reading; use of the selected basic reading program for the Center; and how to create a literate environment.
