Stapells, Cathy. (May 16, 1999) 'When teens venture to the Dark Side — A parents guide to Satanism, cults and violent music.'
OVERVIEW
One study indicates 3% of teens are involved in Satanism. Another places the number as high as 20%.
Colin, age 18, says "Satanism fits into today's materialistic culture. It's stupid to put faith into something. we can't see. Satanism puts the individual first and teaches and teaches us not to be mindless followers."
"Sociologists say teen rebellion is a part of what draws some teenagers to satanic cults."
One social worker states — "Some_ experimenters are looking for something different. They're bored or they want to do something to get their parents' attention, and this certainly shakes up people."
The Internet opens doors to teens that they would have no know otherwise.
Teens. that are generally drawn to deviant subcultures tend to be outcasts from the mainstream teen subculture.
"It's a phase some kids go through, a fascination with different kinds of music. The music's a way to find a different meaning of life and to determine a value system,"
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION AND DISCUSSION
1. How can I raise the esteem of teens?
2. Should the church be doing more to educate parents in prevention?
3. How can fill the spiritual void of our teens?
