Preparing for vocational choice
Mitchell, C.E. (1988, Summer). Preparing for vocational choice. Adolescence, 23(90), Summer 1988, 331-334.
OVERVIEW
"Adolescents are often overwhelmed and disillusioned by the monumental and momentous task and risk of making a career choice," says Christina Mitchell in her article, "Preparing for Vocational Choice." In our contemporary, fast-paced world, making a career choice is yet another pressure for adolescents in the industrialized world. Must this process be pressure-filled and anxiety-ridden? If not, what can be done? When? By whom?
Parents, teachers, guidance counselors, and youth leaders can help a young person head in the right career direction and, in turn, help their personal growth, alleviate their stress, and boost their self-esteem. Furthermore, those who help young people may offer them valuable insights into their own personalities, ambitions, and talents.
The author emphasizes that students who have "always known" what they have "wanted to do" are the "rare exceptions." The author adds that the guidance counselor is invaluable for being able to provide all students accurate information.
Mitchell says that, unfortunately, many people "stick with" their first career choices even when they dislike them. They choose to remain in their vocations usually for economic reasons.
Finally, the author indicates that helping people make "enlightened" career choice can be an enjoyable "adventure" that helps the person earn an income and learn about oneself.
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION AND DISCUSSION
- Do you know any young people who are puzzled by making career choices?
- What would you offer them in the way of advice or encouragement?
- Do you know anyone who hates their job? Why do you think this may be so?
- Does your job fit your interests, abilities, personality, and ambitions?
IMPLICATIONS

- Most adolescents greatly appreciate adult guidance on this issue.
- The school guidance counselor is an invaluable resource for choosing careers.
- Deciding a suitable career is a process in self-discovery. It is all right if this is not a clear and easy process.
