Who They Serve: Residents of the border town of Pharr, Texas and the impoverished “colonias” located in Hildago county

What They Do:  Youth leadership and life skills development, ESL, youth education, GED classes, computer literacy, health and wellness education, parenting, child care

Brief Description:

The Pharr Literacy Project serves a greatly impoverished population that is largely without the necessary skills to be a productive part of the American economy.  In response to this growing problem, this program provides GED prep-work, ESL classes, introductory computer classes, and pre-literacy classes for children.  Over the past year nearly 650 participants were served, with a participant retention rate of 72 percent.  65 percent of ESL students have successfully graduated to the next level of study, and 70 percent of involved children have met or exceeded their personal reading goals.
