The Nobel Peace Prize


Aside from humanitarian work and peace movements, the Prize has been awarded to a wide field of work including advocacy of human rights, mediation of international conflicts and arms control and disarmament. The site includes links to their Nobel Peace Center and Symposia.

Preserving world peace is a central purpose of the United Nations. Under the

Charter, Member States agree to settle disputes by peaceful means and refrain from threatening or using force against other States.

 

The United States Institute of Peace Its mandate established by Congress is “to support the development, transmission, and se of knowledgeto promote peace and curb violent international confict… through the widest possible range of education and training, basic and applied research opportunities, and peace information services on the means to promote international peace and the resolution of conflicts among the nations and people of the world without recourse to violence.”

Küng, Hans (1990) Global Responsibility: In Search of a New World Ethic, London: SCM Press, 158 pp. This is a remarkable manifesto for thinking people of faith. The Introduction to this book begins: No survival without a world ethic. No world peace without peace between religions. No peace between religions without dialogue between the religious.” Doesn’t that get the discussion going? This is a logical preamble toward world peace—or as much as can be obtained. Küng, Hans, ed. (1995) Yes, To A Global Ethic, London: SCM Press, 239 pp. Here a remarkable group of world leaders respond to  Küng’s argument for a global ethic and add their own ideas.

 

 

Stassen, Glen, ed. (1998) Just Peacemaking: Ten Practices for Abolishing War, Cleveland, Ohio: The Pilgrim Press, 209 pp. During the 1990s some 23 American scholars, representing pacifists and just war advocates, collaborated to lay out a plan for individuals, grass roots groups, voluntary associations, and religious organizations could work together for peace. The ten practices are laid out in ten chapters are make excellent places from which to carry on discussion.

(2005) Muslim and Christian Reflections on Peace: Divine and Human Dimensions, University Press, 172 pp. “This book presents biblical and qur’anic analyses of human nature which lie at the heart of conflicts.” The New Testament account of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus as the divine response to human evildoing as the divine response to human violence and evildoing” is explained as a legitimate interpretation of the Qur’an by some Muslim scholars.
