Illiteracy is a major problem for Nigeria. Estimates have the number of Nigerians over 15 who are illiterate at 26 million (almost 37% of the over 15 population).
In 1994, there were almost 40 thousand primary schools in Nigeria, with an enrollment of 16.2 million. There were almost 2 million more males than females in primary schools that year.
