BOOKS
Bly, Robert (1992) Iron John: A Book about Men, Vintage, 288 pp. Poet and workshop leader, the author of this book has created a folktale with many-layered meanings that help men understand the masculinity that needs to be re-imagined and affirmed.
Eldredge, John (2001) Wild at Heart: Discovering the Secret of a Man’s Soul, Nelson Books, 224 pp. This book has been widely popular especially among Evangelical Christians. Some may find its romanticism of wilderness adventure carried a bit too far, but its lessons seem widely applicable and helpful.
Keen, Sam (1992) Fire in the Belly: On Being a Man, Bantam, 288 pp. A widely-applauded and used secular book that calls men to discover and use the hidden resources of their inner psyches. It has been found helpful for men and women to distinguish different gender traits.
Miller, Donald (2006) To Own a Dragon: Reflections on Growing Up Without a Father, Navpress, 208 pp. The popular speaker and author of Blue Like Jazz again makes himself extremely vulnerable regarding his struggle to find what it means to be a man devoid of a father’s model. This book has been of help to those growing up with fathers as well.
Moore, Robert (1991) King, Warrior, Magician, Lover: Rediscovering the Archtypes of the Mature Masculine, HarperSanFrancisco, 192 pp. Notably the first of the books above, the title alone should be helpful. The writer describes boyish, immature attitudes and behavior before using mythology and Jungian psychology to highlight the characteristics of the mature man of action.
Rohr, Richard (2005) From Wild Man to Wise Man: Reflections on Male Spirituality, St. Anthony Messenger Press, 182 pp. The work of Franciscan priest Richard Rohr has helped a wide range of men as they find a combination of practical psychology and deep, broad, biblical spirituality.
