How to keep tab on kids on the internet
How to keep tab on kids on the internet.
OVERVIEW
Parents should be concerned about inappropriate or excessive use of the Internet by children. And they should be involved with their children as they use their computers. Studies show three dangers regarding kids on the Internet:
Inappropriate material. Study after study indicates that viewing violence and sex in the media can affect some children negatively. Such material is freely offered to children on the Web. Addictive patterns. Too much of anything—television, radio, role-playing games, or whatever—can be harmful to young people. There is an especially addictive pattern regarding chatting. Excessive dependence of "virtual relationships" can hinder the development of healthy live relationships. Dangerous predators. Hundreds of skilled pedophiles, sex addicts, and malicious propagators of hate are preying on vulnerable children and youth. They seem to promise the young what they desire most: a new and satisfying relationship.
Parents can take several steps to protect their children:
- Make Internet usage an open, family—rather than private—activity. Keep your computer, at least your on-line computer, in a central area of the house.
- Get involved and get the whole family involved. In this family activity, model discretion and selectivity.
- Use protective measures—programs are available to block out material inappropriate for particular ages.
- Respectfully monitor what has been accessed or down-loaded.
- Discuss appropriate rules for Internet use with the whole family.
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION AND DISCUSSION
- With what do you agree or disagree in the guidelines above? What would you add or delete? What special problems remain?
- Does the Internet provide benefits and dangers to people of all ages?
- Give some examples of good family activities on the Net.
