Freire Paulo (1972, 2000) Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Continuum International Publishing Group, 183 pp. This is not easy reading and the book demands contextualization back into Brazil of the 1950s and 60s. Freire came out of the Catholic elite class to demand liberation of the poor through radical education. Such education would not accept the status quo but entered into a process with the oppressed to shape their curriculum out of their experience and for their life situation. It is education for empowerment of the powerless involving social change. Although anti-capitalist (at that time), it is not pure Marxism. And it is critiqued not only by more conservative traditional educationalists, but by progressives like Blanca Facundo who tried to put Friere’s ideas to work and studied other attempts elsewhere.
