Clay County Habitat for Humanity

HOUSING

Clay County Habitat for Humanity ( Middleburg , FL )

Who They Serve : Low-to-moderate income families in need of decent, affordable housing as well as high school students needing to learn a marketable trade for future employment.

What They Do : Clay County Habitat for Humanity has an innovative partnership with the Clay County School Board called “The School House Partnership”. Responding to the needs for better low-income housing and hands-on training in the trades for highschoolers, low-income homes are framed, detailed, and then delivered from a local high school to a neighborhood being revitalized.

Brief Description :

This program seeks to combine the mission of Habitat for Humanity with the aims of the public school system in Middleburg , Florida . 300 students from four high schools in Clay County frame houses and put on the roofs, shingles, doors, and windows. Around fifty students involved in Applied Technology classes begin working on the homes during class time in order to develop a trade they can use in the workforce after graduation. After the shell of the house is completed (usually at the end of the school year), Clay County Habitat then transports the house to its final location and solicits volunteers to complete construction. Through this initiative, 87 new homes have been built since 1987. Ultimately the whole community benefits from this creative project that pairs aspiring carpenters with the needs of low-income communities.
