Harry is great for kids of all ages

Perry, M. (1999, September 28). ‘Harry’ is great for kids of all ages. The Daily Oklahoman, Destinations, p. 9.

OVERVIEW

While there is some controversy swirling around Harry Potter books, this book critic finds the series wonderfully entertaining:

I think my studied literary reaction to Harry Potter went something like ‘Wow!’

The series centers around Harry, a "wand-toting, broom-racing wizard." Harry is an orphan of a good wizard and a good witch who were killed by evil folks. Harry spends most of his time in boarding school (Hogwarts) adventures, but the summers, he reluctantly lives with his distasteful aunt, uncle, and cousin.

In these adventure fiction books, the typical theme is the struggle between good and evil. The reviewer writes that the series "takes you through a twisting and turning plot that will have you cheering at the same time that you’re hiding under the covers."

The critic also encourages parents to read the books with their children, and to discuss the lessons "about the good things in us—loyalty, friendship, giving and caring, honesty, kindness."

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION AND DISCUSSION

  1. How do young people in your area respond to Harry Potter? Their parents?
  2. From what you know about the books, do you believe that they are acceptable for children to read?
  3. What good can come from reading Harry Potter? What are the dangers?
  4. Why are Harry Potter books so popular among young readers?

IMPLICATIONS

  1. It is a good idea for those who work with kids—especially parents—to read Harry Potter along with their children. Any questionable situations can then be immediately discussed.
  2. Harry Potter books may interest children who had not previously enjoyed reading. The enjoyment of the series could spark a young person to develop a love for reading.
  3. It is important to always encourage young people to read—for fun, adventure, and learning. It is also important to train them to read critically, thoughtfully, and realistically.
