Description

The project will carry a three year project on environmental conservation and livelihood improvement in lower nyakach division. The project is accepting volunteers globally to participate and support the project as from February 2012 - November 2013. the volunteers are given opportunity to suggest the period he/she would like to take to the project(the period is not restricted). The volunteers will be able to lean our community culture and gain experience in working with the rural community. They will be taken to community historical areas and tour the game parks. The volunteer will stay with host organization within the community.
Overall Project objective:
To support community projects aimed at poverty reduction through improved livelihood systems and the conservation of community natural resources and initiatives for enhanced environmental management and governance.

Specific objectives:
1.To increase acreage under tree cover by planting a minimum of 500,000 trees in targeted locations in L. Nyakach Division within 36 months
2.To contribute towards reduction of siltation in L. Victoria through establishment of water control systems in Lower Nyakach Division within 36 months
3.To strengthen economic coping mechanisms of community members living in six locations within Lower Nyakach Division to generate income & sustain increased food security within thirty six (36) months
Working with 15 community based organization both sisters, youth and farmers group -who will be involve in sub project. Some of the activities will include1. Conduct base line survey to provide the project bench mark
2.Plant a minimum of 500,000 trees and trees conservation.
a)Establish seven (7) tree nurseries and running environmental health and ICT ns schools
b)Establish Twenty five (25) wood lots.
c)Community sensitization and training on environmental conservation.
d)Promotion of energy saving jikos
3.Construction of water control and conservation structures
a)Curry out an Environmental Impact Assessment.(EIA)
b)Construction of one (1) water pan to protect a spring.
c)Construction of gabions and water ways and channels
4.Develop environmental strategic tools and information for publicity, marketing and networking.
a)Five (5) year strategic plan development, launching and dissemination
b)Development and hosting of website
c)Equip an existing youth information resource centre with essential environmental tools, information, to provide e-learning on environment and agricultural techniques, products and marketing.
5.Twelve (12) Community groups equitably capacity built and supported to take up viable, innovative and sustainable Income Generating Activities/livelihood initiatives that are friendly to environment and gender inclusive.
a)Improved dairy farming;
i)Conduct market survey and development of business plan
ii)Conduct training on improved dairy farming
iii)Establish four (4) dairy farms, stock with two cows each and a bull camp for each unit.
iv)Production of Bio-gas from the dairy dung
b)Poultry production
i)Conduct market survey and development of business plan
ii)Conduct training on poultry management and marketing.
iii) Establishment and stocking of four (4) poultry farms
c)Modern horticultural farming.
i)Conduct market survey and development of business plan
ii)Training on horticultural farming
iii)Provide inputs and supplies for the identified farmers within group.
d)Carry out exchange visits to farmers supported to initiate IGAs
6.Conduct project monitoring and evaluation
a)Training of project implementation committee including procurement and monitoring and evaluation team
b)Conduct monthly PIC and quarterly M&E meetings
c)Curry out annual stakeholdersÂ’ project review meetings.
d)Train group representatives involved in sub project management on project management and systems.
