Description

Goodness and Mercy Missions in a bid to help the orphan and needy children in Jinkfuin has set up a primary school. This is to give the children sound basic education. A lot of these orphan children do not have anybody to sponsor them. They continue to suffer. We are looking for volunteers to work up a sponsorship program so we can connect these children to sponsors who can help them.

Help Jinkfuin Help Itself
Project Report

Introduction

1. In accordance with reference A the project ‘Help Jinkfuin Help itself’ was undertaken in a partnership between BERUDEP and Goodness and Mercy Mission (GMM). The aim of the project was to provide ABCD Primary school with basic teaching materials in order to improve the education of the local people. The project was rightly allocated no budget and relied heavily on the goodwill of the community.

Aim

2. The aim of this report is to provide all involved with clear and accurate information on what was achieved and how things can be improved if such a project was repeated.

Reporting Points

3. Community Participation. When this project was conceived many members of the community thought it laughable. Statements such as, ‘the people are too greedy to help’ and ‘why is a white man begging for things?’ were made by many. I can now say without any fear of contradiction these statements do not hold true. Everyone in the heart of the community that could help did help. I particularly want to thank the people that did not have the means to support with any grand gestures but supported with what they could.

4. Outside Assistance. The use of people from well beyond the confines of Belo was not seen as an option at the time, however I now believe that passing the word across to people from cities elsewhere in Cameroon should have been utilised given further time. I also believe that some members of the community that could have helped chose not to, not because they had no means. It was the community of Jinkfuin that benefits from the project and therefore the people of Jinkfuin should be willing to hassle those they know in their hearts can help but for whatever reason have chosen not to. These statements aren’t aimed at the everyday people of Jinkfuin who may be struggling to get by, but those that have been fortunate enough to live in more than comfort.

5. Planning and Organisation. The help received from Pastor Teh Francis in organising the project was indispensable. His dedication to and knowledge of the community was well worth tapping in to and should be used in future projects. From a project management side, I can’t complain about my task being made more difficult by changing circumstances as everything ran smoothly and the majority of the community was very willing to help in this area.

6. Special Thanks and Celebration. In order to celebrate the achievements made by the community a celebration was held in Jinkfuin. This was funded by the personal donations made by the project supervisor and Pastor Francis. This celebration was well deserved by all, everyone that assisted the project did so at some personal sacrifice and done so willingly, proving that Cameroon can help itself if only Cameroon puts the effort in. Special thanks go to all those named in Annex A for all the generous donations, both great and small. I would like to give thanks to all carpenters (and apprentices) and the man that volunteered his vehicle to us, willingly above and beyond our expectations.

7. Classrooms. After all the material that we aimed for has been acquired, the school also required further space to teach, talks are currently underway to borrow already existing buildings from people local to the school. Classrooms aren’t always four walls and a roof; therefore I would like to urge the community to think of more creative methods to overcome this problem. Perhaps outside teaching when the weather permits.

Further Work

7. The aims of the project have all been met except bringing proper pay to the teachers who deserve more than ‘to be compensated’. This is a difficult problem to deal with and will need multiple solutions. I am currently looking into ‘sponsor a teacher’ which may or may not attract the eye of outside help. The problem I see with this is sustainability, how will this last?

Summary

8. To all those that doubted the ability of the local people, the list of donations in annex A gives proof of what can be done. The community has done this all of its own free will, and the congratulations needs to go to them (each and every one of them), not those that administered the project.
