Description
How would you like to make a lasting difference in the life of an inner city youth? With the Orange County Youth Commission, you can! The Orange County Youth Commission is currently looking for tutors who have a passion for teaching to work with our youth. Since our foundation in 1997, we of the Orange County Youth Commission have been committed to serving youth in Santa Ana . Our mission is to bring hope and purpose to children and youth in the inner city by developing a partnership among the business/private sector and the faith community to provide wholesome activities that inspire, educate, train, and transform lives.
Our youth are males and females between the ages of 16 and 21 and many of them train at our sports program, the Santa Ana Boxing Club.
The Boxing Club is open every weekday from 3 - 7pm for students to train and be taught by our highly motivated and dedicated coaches. Students learn discipline, self-respect, and commitment while staying off the streets and away from local gangs.
Our youth come from low-income families, are basic skills deficient, and live in a high crime and gang area in Santa Ana . We are currently looking for volunteer tutors to commit to meeting about once per week for an hour to work for homework help and tutoring. Tutors can also expect to develop a positive relationship with their student and help them to reach their educational goals in school and beyond.
Tutoring will take place in Santa Ana at the Boxing Club on Saturdays (anytime from 10AM-2PM ), though tutors may schedule a weekday session with their student and meet at the public library.
We at the Orange County Youth Commission measure success in changed lives - help bring hope to a student and equip them with the tools they need to succeed!
Requirements:
Our organization is run by passionate people who sincerely desire to see our youth succeed. We would like to have volunteers join us in a partnership to serve our students as best we can.
We are looking for individuals who love what they do! There is something contagious by a self-motivated person who truly believes that education means giving one the ability to make choices in life.
Both life and academics are fraught with ups and downs. Tutors must be able to consistently work with their student in a positive and encouraging manner. So much of how we approach a task depends upon one's attitude and we desire to work with volunteers who are able to be motivating because they truly believe in their students and what they do.
*We require that volunteers fill out a volunteer application, have an informal interview with Tutor Coordinator, and be fingerprinted in order to work with youth (a $35 expense).
