Description

Project introduction Imani Rehabilitation Agency was established to cater for the needs of children who go to the streets to escape poverty or battering at home or perhaps they were orphaned due to AIDS. Once on the street and with the introduction of freedom from responsibility and addictive substances such as glue, marijuana; more than anything else, the founder, Faith Wanjiru, a devoted Christian, wanted to provide these children with love and hope for the future. Since her youth, Ms Wanjiru saw the plight of orphans and street children and had the dream of starting a home for them. In 1992, she officially started Imani Rehabilitation Agency. Imani started with only 15 children from the streets of Nairobi. Over the years and with the support of well wishers, the project has expanded to cater for the needs of 350 children while having two locations in Kayole: Imani A and Imani B. Project location Both Imani A and B Are located in the Easter region of Nairobi within an Estate called Kayole. Imani goals Imanis goal is to rehabilitate street children and children living under difficult circumstances. Imani does this through the provision of basic needs: food, clothing and shelter, education, counseling and training in various vocational training (cake baking, dress making and child care). Most importantly, Imani provides the children with love. Schooling During the rehabilitation process, the child is assessed for schooling and is either taken to formal schools or non-formal schools. Formal schooling: Children who are capable of sitting in a classroom-setting are taken in the formal school in Kayole where they undergo teaching of the regular syllabus. Approximately 25% of Imani children are enrolled in formal schools. Informal schooling: Some children must still learn how to relate to others in a classroom setting and therefore are taken to ImaniÂ?s informal school. Located at Imani B, the informal school teaches children the basics. Dedicated teachers employed by Imani assist more than 200 children in the school that also caters for children from the surrounding areas. Baby care unit Imani has another section that caters for abandoned babies found either in the street or in the hospitals of Nairobi. The project was started in 1999 and it caters for babies ranging from one day old to a year. Imani allows adoption to people through the Government of KenyaÂ?s Juveniles Court. Health care Many children come to Imani with under developed immune systems due to poor diet, exposure to unsanitary living conditions and other factors. Through the introduction of balanced diets and exceptional details to personal hygiene, Imani has improved the health of the children. For those who do get sick from the common illnesses, Imani has a nurse and a small clinic to cater for the needs of the children. Other cases are taken to clinics and hospitals around Nairobi.
