Volunteer to Help East African Refugees Pass the US Citizenship Exam!
|
Description
Organization:The mission of East African Community Services (EACS) is to develop and strengthen the capacity of East Africans in King County at individual, family, and community levels. The population we serve is primarily Somali, ranging from refugees "fresh off the plane" to citizens, from illiterate to fluent in English, and from infants to elders. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we are the premier service for East Africans in King County, and have worked with thousands of East African refugees in the last nine years.
The program: EACS offers assistance with preparing for citizenship examinations, including written and spoken English tests and exams testing oneÂ’s knowledge of the United States. Our volunteers generally work very closely with students as they prepare for these tests.
The commitment: Our classes run Monday through Thursday, 10:00-12:00 and 6:30-8:30.
What youÂ’ll experience: You will be a bridge for refugees as they become acclimated to life in the US. In some cases, refugees have lived in the US for years, and in others, they arrived only a few months ago. As such, you will be working with a diverse population of refugees, some with limited English ability and understanding of American culture. You are in the unique position to assist them as they navigate this important step in their lives.

What weÂ’re looking for: Volunteers who are fluent in both spoken and written English, and preferably have previous tutoring or teaching experience.
