Volunteer at EMUKHUYA PRIMARY SCHOOL

Description
Project information: Emukhuya Primary school is a community school with a population of 263 pupils. There are 130 boys and 133 girls, 18 boys are orphans and 25 girls total orphans, 55 kids are in E.C.D [Early Child Development]. There are 10 classes in the school, out of these 3 are cemented and the remaining are earthen floors, the school has 10 teachers in total. The school offers the following subjects: Maths, English, Kiswahili, Science, Social Studies and Physical Education. The school also faces a number of challenges which are:
Earthen classes which are dusty and bring about jiggers which affect the students.
Most pupils come from poor families and these affects their learning as they do not have the learning materials needed.
Lack of adequate facilities in the school: books, pens, chalks, charts, book storage facility, administrative block, sports facilities, teachers guide books and games.
Lack of parental care most children stay back home with their grandparents who cannot provide all the basic needs especially food and these grandparents are too old.
Children from poor families come to school when they are very hungry and this affects their learning the school is planning for feeding program.
Target Group: The target group consists of pupils from the local community.
Location: The project is located in Emuhaya District in Western Kenya, about 400 km from Nairobi.
Nature of Work: The volunteers will be responsible for working together with the local teachers in helping to teach in: Physical Education, Music, Design, Creative Arts, Maths, English and Social Studies. They shall also offer guidance and counseling.
Requirements:
o Male and female persons above the age of 18 years from any part of Kenya and the world regardless of race, religion or Education. Those below 18 should obtain written consent from guardian.
o Positive attitude towards independent progress of others
o Willingness to adapt to local conditions
o A desire to interact and understand other peoples culture and philosophy of life
o Open-mindedness and willingness to freely exchange ideas information and experiences without imposing own values on others
o Commitment to translating the ideals of international voluntary service into deeds during and after project season

Additional Details:
Accommodation: Volunteers will be hosted at family within the community.
Food: Basic meals will be catered for at the host family.
What to bring for cultural exchange: Of course you do not have to bring anything with you but for intercultural exchange it is always interesting for the people in the community to see pictures of your home country and family or to taste a specialty of your home town.
Special Remarks: All volunteers are required to speak English well enough to communicate and carry out the activities.
