Teaching OVC at UYWEFA education centre
|
Description
UYWEFA established an orphans education centre to provide free education to 100 orphans at nursery and P1 stage. The centre was opened in Kazo Central at the end of April 2011.
The centre is community-owned and therefore largely staffed by local volunteers. We are seeking the assistance of an international volunteer to supplement the skills of local volunteers and provide administrative and teaching support.
This opportunity would suit someone who has experience of administration or teaching in early years settings and is looking to help develop a project from the grass roots. The ability to work with the community to develop the project is essential. Candidates will need adaptability, enthusiasm and patience.
Ideally volunteers will be available to work from 7.30am - 2pm each day and must be able to commit for at least one term (3 months).
Language lessons and cultural orientation training will be provided for international volunteers. A home stay can also be arranged for a small fee.
All volunteers will be given the opportunity to continually develop through formal training sessions, observing professional practice and regular forums to discuss best teaching practice. All volunteers will receive child protection training prior to the opening of the school and background checks will be performed to ensure the safety of children registered at the centre.
Teaching staff will meet twice prior to opening the schols to coordinate their term plans. They will then meet with the community to discuss learning needs for the children and discuss the proposed curriculum.
The centre was opened in April 2011 to 30 OVCs at nursery stage, divided evenly between baby and top. It has expand to 60 places for the second term keeping a similar ratio. For the new year beginning in January we will move our current top class into P1 to ensure continuity for these vulnerable children and register a new baby class. For the third term beginning January 2012 we aim to have 100 OVCs registered with the centre.
Uganda Youth and Women's Effort Fighting AIDS (UYWEFA) works with people who are living with, and affected by HIV/AIDS, sensitizing the community by raising awareness about the dangers of AIDS. We work in partnership with other organisations to carry out voluntary counselling and testing and refer the clients to further medical treatment.
