Description
The purpose of the Stitch-A-Wish volunteer is to provide the patients with handsewn items that are utilized throughout the medical center for comfort, therapeutic play, arts and crafts, and safety. Many of these items would normally not be available for the children were it not for the stitchers. There is no minimum hourly or project commitment.
Stitchers will:
** Supply their own materials for the sewing projects or seek donations for same.
** Follow the patterns provided by Cook Children's. Check with staff before altering patterns. Fabric patterns can vary from infant to teen prints, for boys and girls. (WWW.DFWSTITCHAWISH.COM lists all patterns)
** Choose from the following options:
-Pillowcases (white, plain pastel, bright prints or holiday prints, standard size)
-Medical Play Dolls ( plain muslin-variety of skin tone colors- not black)
-Hospital Gowns for Dolls
-Blankets and Quilts (all sizes, colors, patterns, and weights for infants, boys, girls, and teens)
-Telemetry Bibs (used for toddlers to hold heart monitoring equipment while they are mobile--lightweight denim or heavy cotton).
-Taglets (for infants)
-Bed Buddies (saddlebags for bedridden patients)
-Isolet Sheets (preemie)
-Shorts (elastic waist band, all sizes adult and child)
-Boppy Pillow Covers
-Furless Teddy Bears (cotton, silky, plain or patterned)
-Crib Bumper Pads (w/velcro tabs for attaching rattles or teethers, clear pockets for family photos, etc.--for long term stay infants)
-Canvas Memory Bags
-Drawstring Tote Bags (for children going into foster care)
-Christmas Toy Bags (holiday or winter patterns and colors, laundry bag-drawstring type in pillowcase to trash bag sizes)
** Ensure that buttons, google eyes, or other notions are well-secured on the items to prevent a choking hazard.
** Check each item carefully to ensure that all pins, needles, etc. have been removed.
** Drop off items with Volunteer Services or the Child Life Dept for distribution. If the Stitcher does not drive, other arrangements for delivery may be able to be made through Volunteer Services, 682-885-4337.
** Since Cook Children's is a non-profit agency, we ask that you please keep track of the hours spent working on projects (shopping for supplies, sewing, ironing, delivering, etc.) and turn them in with your sewn items. Volunteer hours should be recorded on donor forms which are supplied by Cook Children's.
** Fill out a donation form (for your records and ours) and turn it in with your Stitcher project.
