Outreach volunteers

Description
Would you like to help those in need in your community? Volunteers are needed in Northern Virginia to help with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program which provides free tax preparation for low-income families. The VITA program is coordinated in cooperation with the IRS. Volunteers are needed from October 2011 through April 2012. Training and orientation will be provided over the summer.
Outreach volunteers will serve as ambassadors of the VITA program by going out into the community to educate and inform low income families and to encourage them to take advantage of this free tax preparation service. Duties will include handing out flyers in your communities, informing businesses in your area of this free service for their employees and taking initiatives such as speaking at parentsÂ’ nights at your local schools, reaching out to churches, community centers and homes for the elderly.
We are looking for people who can commit to volunteering 3 to 4 hours per week from October 2011 through April 2012. We especially need those who can speak other languages in addition to English.
You will receive an IRS Certification of Appreciation at the end of the tax season.

Requirements:
Volunteers need to be outgoing and enjoy dealing with people. Volunteers are expected to find opportunities to reach out to low income communities to and be able to encourage them to take advantage of the free tax preparation program, educate them about the need to file taxes and assure them that anyone with an of $49,000 or below can have their taxes done for free.
