Description

Because Nicaragua is a developing country, we lack the essentials for good health and development. This need is especially felt in the rural areas which are isolated from the comparative abundance of the cities.
This placement also receives a high volume of patients and are always in need of an extra pair of hands. From giving injections to helping measure and weigh children, any help a volunteer can provide will aid in a quicker patient turnover and allow more people from the communiy to be seen.

The following are examples of the types of tasks which volunteers (depending on medical background) will be asked to fulfill: 1- to assist doctors in hands-on work with patients. 3- preparing vaccinations, giving vaccinations, checking vital signs, weighing and measuring children to check healthy growth rates and properly communicating any discrepencies to mothers 2- help the population to understand the importance of preventing disease through one on one interactions with the public 3- preparing medical supplies 4- psychologist: we need seminars for the staff. 5- nurse training for the staff. 6- training in computer data base design and general programming.

Requirements:
We need people that are already in the medical field. This could be an undergraduate with appropriate experience. A practicing medical doctor would be of tremendous help.
This placement is ideal for undergraduate students who are interesting in gaining hands on experience in the medical field. This placement has a keen desire to teach and mentor those with a willingness to learn. Volunteers will be taught how to properly administer medication, give vaccinations, read medical charts and perform other medical tasks.
