Description
When ex-offenders ask what makes a successful reentry one answer that is often heard is having a positive person in their life. A mentor walks with this person from their incarceration by spending time together, listening, being supportive, offering ideas and life experience, maintaining healthy boundaries, and meeting consistently. Supportive relationships can make the difference in reducing the rate of recidivism and becoming further involved with the Criminal Justice System.
Requirements:
The mentor is a mature, responsible adult and has a sincere interest in helping ex-offenders re-enter society. He/she has a willingness to donate time and the ability to relate to ex-offenders who may not share the mentor's values and lifestyle. He/she must take the initiative to meet with the person starting in the correctional facility. The mentor must have the ability to set limits and boundaries assertively and consistently, and to maintain confidentiality. The mentor must be 21 years or older, have access to reliable transportation, have a valid MN drivers license and proof of insurance. If an ex-offender, (s)he must be one year off paper. If chemically dependent, (s)he must be sober for at least 1 year. The mentor must be stable in his/her own life and must be able to provide personal and professional references.
Mentors must attend initial training, ongoing support groups, adhere to the policies and regulations of the Adult Correction Facility in Plymouth, and report to PO or Mentor Contact Person any concerns regarding interactions with your mentee.
