Description
Thanks to our wonderful volunteers, this Reading Center is at capacity for the 2011-2012 school year. We still encourage interested volunteers to sign up, as we will be emailing reminders and updates to potential tutors over the summer.
Tutoring will start again in late August/early September 2012.
A child's third grade reading scores can predict with 70% accuracy the likelihood they will graduate from high school.
Reading Partners provides an opportunity for volunteers from the community to give one 45 minute session each week to tutor one-on-one with an elementary school student.
Pick any 1-hour time slot that's convenient for you between 9am and 5pm, Monday through Thursday (you are welcome to help more if able).
Reading Partners uses a very structured and easy-to-follow curriculum.
One-on-one instruction at the student's reading level provides the opportunity for individualized academic attention and a healthy learning relationship with you, the volunteer.
Volunteers are, in turn, supported at all times by Reading Partners school site coordinators and staff.

Requirements:
Who can volunteer?
Almost anyone! As long as you are high school aged or older, speak fluent English, and do not have a criminal record, you can volunteer as a Reading Partners tutor.
Do I have to be an American citizen to volunteer?
No, you do not have to be an American citizen to volunteer; however, it is required that you are fluent in the English language.
Do I need to have teaching experience to volunteer?
No experience is required. In fact, 70% of our volunteers have no previous teaching experience. Of course, if you have a teaching background, we welcome and value your experience.
Is there training?
Yes. To get started you will participate in a new tutor orientation (90minutes) that will introduce you to the Reading Partners program, best teaching practices, and our unique curriculum. In addition, on your first day of tutoring you will be given one-on-one training, which usually includes shadowing another volunteer who is tutoring a student.
