Kenya Project Volunteer
|
Description
Kenya?s population is hugely affected by the struggles of poverty, unemployment and HIV/AIDS. At the end of 2005, it was
estimated that 1.3 million people in Kenya were living with HIV/AIDS (150 000 of those being children), with a staggering
1.1 million additional orphans due to virus. There are various places with countless possibilities to impact the lives of those that are affected by this myriad of problems, such as the Nairobi slums, surrounding orphanages, schools, and clinics.
The orphanages allow volunteers to become involved in helping teach basic education, and helping with general needs such as cooking meals or organising sports- and play activities to promote the well being of the children. Volunteers also run Bible study groups at these centres, and may have the opportunity to improve some of the facilities e.g. painting pictures on the walls, fixing fences etc. By spending time with the children, loving them, and contributing to their learning and development, volunteers are able to positively impact the lives of these children more than they could ever imagine.
Volunteers have the opportunity to work with Care for AIDS, which offers a holistic approach in which the people?s medical, physical and spiritual needs are addressed. There are several
opportunities for involvement, including counseling, homebased care, and conducting seminars/training for the staff. If you have any medical expertise, you would be very useful in the medical section and would work alongside
the local health professionals.
ACTS volunteers also help out in preschools, working alongside and assisting the local teachers, aiming to enrich the teaching programme and not to change it. Twinkle Twinkle Nursery School and LCCK are two of the pre-schools that we work with. The teachers are always thankful for any kind of assistance or new lesson ideas they can get from the volunteers. Great highlights for the kids include when volunteers organize fun sports- or craft days, or even arrange for
them to go on a day-excursion.
The Power Women?s Group is a self-supported group of ladies, who are all HIV+. They have come together to support each other in trying circumstances, learning together how to deal with their sickness and how to provide for themselves.
They started a small business and have a small shop on the outskirts of the Kibera slums, where they sell their own handmade crafts and clothing. ACTS volunteers come and help them with new ideas for their sales products and help them improve their English skills. A big part of this project is teaching the women more about God?s Word, so many ACTS volunteers
have the chance to get involved in doing chronological Bible storytelling. This placement is very challenging, and will not only give you a great idea of what life is like for many Kenyan people, but also give you the opportunity to get involved in an area that desperately needs help.
ACTS has developed a relationship with Cheshire, which is a training centre for women with disabilities (ages 15 ? 23). It aims to empower these women through skills development & education (e.g. life skills, sewing, beading, gardening, education through drama etc), so that they become more independent and are able to use their skills for income-generating activities. Volunteers are needed to help with practical needs such as painting and teaching, as well as running exercise programmes and spending quality one-on-one time with the women.
