Are you a good listener? Do you care about those who are going through hard times? Come volunteer as a HelpLine volunteer at Samaritans! Samaritans has a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week hotline for those in need to call for help. We're looking for people who are ready and willing to listen with a nonjudgmental, compasionate ear. Samaritans' volunteers come from all walks of life: they are working people, students, professionals; they are teens (15 years and older) and they are retirees; they come from a variety of cultural, educational, and religious backgrounds. While they do not necessarily share any particular prior experience or training, Samaritans share a deep respect for human life and a desire to reach out to those in pain. Samaritans build on these in an extensive training course, learning the skills necessary in work as a telephone befriender. Most befrienders find that their work quickly becomes an important part of their life. Few things can be as rewarding as knowing that you were there when someone needed you most. Think you'd like to be a Samaritan? Let us know! Give us a call, shoot us an email and check out our website: Requirements: Applicants must attend an information session, where they will gain more information about Samaritans and will be interviewed. Applicants must be able to provide three references. Once approved, applicants will participate in a comprehensive training, and upon completion, will make a commitment to serve on the HelpLine 4-hours per week for 9 months.
