Description

Organization:

The mission of East African Community Services (EACS) is to develop and strengthen the capacity of East Africans in King County at individual, family, and community levels. The population we serve is primarily Somali, ranging from refugees "fresh off the plane" to citizens, from illiterate to fluent in English, and from infants to elders. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we are the premier service for East Africans in King County, and have worked with thousands of East African refugees in the last nine years.

The program:

Working in a collaborative classroom environment with other tutors and a dedicated facilitator (and ad hoc interpreter), you will teach basic computer skills, including using a mouse, a keyboard, basic Microsoft Office programs like Word and some Excel, how to create and manage an e-mail account, and how to use online job search websites.

These classes represent a chance for our clients to thrive and compete in a technology-driven world where their employability is greatly increased with computer literacy. You will work directly with and enjoy our community, while providing one of our most highly-requested services. Specialized understanding of computer programming is not required, but basic fluency is.

The commitment:

Currently we run computer classes from 6:30-8:00pm on Thursdays and 5:30-7:00pm on Fridays. We ask for volunteers to commit for a minimum of three months, but we are flexible and would be eager to hear from you even if you can only volunteer short-term.

What you'll experience:

Our office is located in New Holly Campus, where over 800 East African families live. This experience will immerse you in East African culture, and expose you to refugee issues in the US.

Requirements:
What we're looking for:
