Description

Genesis Gardens is a sustainable food and community health initiative of Mobile Loaves & Fishes. We employ formerly homeless men, to empower life transformation and to feed the homeless and a community of formerly homeless men and women in Austin, Texas. We've been featured in Christianity Today (http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2011/july/backtothegarden.html) and in a host of local news outlets (for instance, http://www.statesman.com/life/gardening/sowing-good-seeds-at-genesis-gardens-1734838.html?printArticle=y).

We currently have about 60 formerly homeless folk who live in our housing program (MLF.org/CF) as well as 12 mobile food trucks that go out to the camps, bridges, and parks the homeless spend their time every day of the year. As you can imagine, trying to feed this many people even a little bit of organic food is quite a challenge, especially as we own no land (we currently maintain about 12 gardens, 2 chicken coops, and one drought-challenged bee hive across the Austin area). We have designed an internship program that will be launched in February 2012 to complement the efforts of our formerly homeless garden workforce (Details and application to the internship can be found at MLF.org/Genessigardens). In addition to training in sustainable agriculture and the obvious social justice opportunities of working among the formerly homeless, we are partnering with a discipleship and leadership training organization called Leadership Greenhouse (leadershipgreenhouse.com) to make this a powerful experience that is both educationally practical and personally transformative. Internship will last 4 months and cost $350. Sorry ladies, for our first internship class, we would like to begin with men only. But if you're interested, all candidates should register interest as we will be growing into more than one community house in the coming sessions.
