Alaska Native Villages: Waaaaay Out Missions Summer 2010
|
Description
Alaska is the greatest and most beautiful place in the world. Most mission teams come to the Anchorage area because it is cheapest and easiest to get to. However, we have more than 100 Native Bush villages with no church whatsoever, and many, many more villages with very few spiritual opportunities.
Right now we are having an epidemic of teen suicide in our Bush villages. Check out the following Anchorage newspaper article. http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/rural/story/627621.html
Unfortunately, the places with the greatest need here in Alaska are also the most expensive to get to. It will cost more than just flying to Anchorage. As a Christian pilot friend here once told me, "Souls up here in the Bush are expensive." But what is the value of a soul???
Please pray about serving a week in a Alaska native village sharing the love of Christ through children's Bible school, youth events sports, games, community meals, women's meetings, discipleship, music, and evangelistic meetings. This will be a true adventure that gives back. You'll sleep on air mattresses in the school or tribal hall and you'll participate in Native life, but I promise you will never forget this week. You'll experience Alaska the way it was 50 years ago. Life is slow and life is different in the villages.
A team should be a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 15 people. This works best with church teams, not individuals. Sorry, we can only accept groups, not individuals. Your cost will be your airfare to Anchorage, Fairbanks, Kotzebue, or Nome. Your airfare from there to the village (which will run $350- $650 depending on how far you go) , and $450 which covers your food (which we buy and ship to the village in advance), bedding (we also ship), utilities reimbursement to your village hosts, and connections/housing/day sightseeing in Anchorage.
You may choose almost any week in June or July and the schedule would look like this:
Saturday: Arrive Alaska.
Sunday: Fly to your village
Monday - Thursday: Ministry Project
Friday: Return to Anchorage
Saturday: Sightseeing Day. Evening departure home.
Sunday: Arrive Home
We are hosting ten weeks of village teams in 2010. YOU CHOOSE!!

On Saturday, enjoy a spectacular, jaw-dropping drive south from Anchorage along Turnagain Arm ? a inlet named by the famous explorer Captain Cook. Look for Bald Eagles and Beluga whales in the sea on your right and mountain sheep on the mountains to your left. Soon we'll arrive in magical Portage Valley. If the weather is clear, you will see numerous glaciers. We'll take a short, easy hike to a glacier and experience the wilderness. If we are lucky, we might see a bear or a moose. How often do you get a chance to throw a snowball in mid summer? Later,we will enjoy a wilderness picnic lunch along an arctic river surrounded by stunning scenery. On the way back we?ll stop at the Wildlife Conservation Center and see grizzly bears, brown bear, caribou, moose, buffalo and other Alaskan critters. Oh yeah, they have a great sto
