Flash Mob at SA AIDS Conference 2011

Printer-friendly versionPDF version
This flash mob was conceptionalised by Pieter Swart, CMP, CMM from Conference Consultancy South Africa. He is the Project Manager of the 5th SA AIDS Conference that was held at ICC Durban from 7-10 June 2011. He was also the conference project manager of the previous 4 SA AIDS Conferences since the launch of the series in 2003. The flash mob has been produced by Willie Venter of The Producers of Performing Arts and it was performed by the award winning Clermont Community Choir at the opening session of the 5th SA AIDS Conference. The technical support and recording was done by Lucidity. The flash mob was timed to coincide with the closing remarks of the keynote speaker, Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa, Sandile Ngcobo. Dr Francois Venter, Conference Chairman was at the lectern thanking the Chief Justice when this unannounced activity was launched. Gauging the expressions of surprise from the audience, it had the desired impact and then enjoyment followed when they realised that it was not a protest demonstration (as is generally associated with these aids conferences), but indeed a carefully choreographed performance with an underlying message. The 5th SA AIDS Conference was attended by almost 4000 people (www.saaids.com)
