7 Principles of the New Culture: Part 1

This is part 1 of the seven articles in the “7 Principles of the New Culture” series...

I can vividly remember a conversation I had several years ago with a friend who was a national director of a large ministry. We were talking about their organization and how they planned to address the increasing amount of ethnic diversity in the locations where they were active. He explained how they were creating separate ministries for each ethnic group in those locations in order to “most effectively reach them with the Gospel” because “most people want to be with their own ethnicity”. When I asked if they had plans to eventually try to bring the different ethnic groups together into a multi-ethnic group he explained that they did not because it would “create an extra barrier to the Gospel” and then stated emphatically, “There is no biblical mandate for bringing people together of different ethnicities.” Do you believe that is true? How would you respond?

Many things can (and will) be said about last night's historic election. Regardless if you felt it was an exciting victory or a crushing defeat, there is one thing we should all be able to agree on: our country has entered a multi-ethnic era. The election of our first African American president (who's biracial background embodies multi-ethnicity) is a powerful sign of how rapidly our society has changed and will change in the decades to come. The question on my mind..."Is the church ready?"

Yesterday in my hometown of Detroit, a student was killed and three other students were injured in a drive-by shooting in front of their school. Today, the top story on the local newspaper was on Eminem new CD. That’s not what I am writing about however. It occurred to me that as Non profit managers in ministry, how often get bogged down on our ministries are raising enough money, do we need to lay off staff or personally why we am doing this. As I typing this I am working at a job that has nothing to with non profits or ministry, but I have to pay my bills. So why do keep volunteering, writing this blog or spending 1000s of dollars to pursue a degree in non-profit management. Frankly for the last few weeks I did not have a clue, but now I know.

Faith-based schools have played a vital role in educating generations of inner-city youth, many of whom are from low-income or minority backgrounds. However, between 2000 and 2006, nearly 1,200 of these schools have closed, and the remaining schools have 425,000 fewer students.

The Garment of Praise: "Season" Video

The name of these Miming Ministers is The Garment of Praise. They are minstering to a song entitled "Season" by Donald Lawrence and the Tri-City Singers off of their Restoring The Years CD.

This is a great way to show youths that ministering can come in many different ways, not just singing, preaching or liturgical dance but also through mime.

In August, we watched the Olympics. We watched some of the world's greatest athletes compete to win gold medals and beat world records. How exhilarating it was to see Michael Phelps win the gold by a 100th of a second, and Usain Bolt of Jamaica run so fast that his competitors didn't seem to stand a chance!

The competition got me thinking about the race we're participating in. No, there is no gold medal at the end, and there is no world record to beat. In this race, there is seldom fame and product endorsements that will ultimately pay out big.

SAY Yes! Centers Across America

The most recent issue of SAY Yes Centers National eNewsletter shared some interesting statistics from the 07-08 school year:

Across the nation, there were 177 SAY Yes Centers, an increase of 24 centers.
4520 children attended SAY Yes! Centers.
24 SAY Yes! Launch Trainings occurred through Here's Life Inner City -double from the previous year.
- Unfortunately, 20 centers closed due to lack of funds, space, or volunteers.

I recently viewed the movie Freedom Writers. There is a scene where this inner-city teacher's father encourages his daughter to stay focused by communicating to her that she had been "blessed with this burden".

East Side St. Paul's S.A.Y. Yes! Center

Here's Life Inner City, a division of Campus Crusade for Christ, equips urban churches to operate youth after-school programs called SAY Yes! Centers (Save America's Youth Yes!). Here's Life Inner City (HLIC) provides training for how to start and run a center, as well as Bible lesson curriculum, tutoring resources, and ongoing support. There are SAY Yes! Centers located in cities across the country and every SAY Yes! Center looks quite different, as it is operated by the local church. Some programs are big, serving 100 or more kids. Some are small, serving a handful of kids. Some operate 5 days a week, some operate one day a week.
