Summary:

The Twelve Steps and Jewish Tradition is a pamphlet encouraging Jewish people in 12 step recovery groups.  Rabbi Stone is a recovering alcoholic seeking to help the Jewish community abandon its denial of Jewish alcoholics and addicts and instead embrace and help these people in their recovery.  She also urges Jewish alcoholics and addicts to make the 12 steps work for them in a Jewish context instead of discarding them as necessarily Christian concepts.  She redefines many of the terms Jews often perceive as only Christian (or as having too strong Christian connotations), including:

·    miracles,

·    sin,

·    salvation, and

·    prayer.

Stone concludes with a description of Jewish spirituality as wrapped up in God, Torah, and Israel.  She encourages readers to seek Jewish spirituality as they recover from their addictions and not allow assumptions or fears about Christianity keep them from their own spiritual journey.

Why does FASTEN recommend this resource?

This pamphlet is short and concise.  The author makes a strong argument for Jews to abandon traditional stigmas and assumptions not grounded in Judaism in order to recover from alcoholism or addiction or to help those who need recovery.
