TechMission Corps Fellows Program Guidelines

Printer-friendly version
The TechMission Corps Fellows program expands/augments the regular TMC training program with additional in-depth training through college-accredited courses.  In addition to the Pre-Service Orientation (PSO) and monthly member meetings required of all TMC Members, TechMission Corps Fellows will receive additional college-level training to better equip them for their AmeriCorps terms and to prepare themselves for a life of service to urban communities. All TMC Fellows will complete one or more of City Vision College’s accredited online courses during their terms. City Vision is an accredited online college equipping leaders for working in nonprofits in urban communities. (www.cityvision.edu)

The TMC Fellows program is optional, and TMC members may decide whether are not they want to participate. If TMC Members choose to participate, they will be designated as TMC Fellows and will receive the following benefits.

COURSES

  •  TMC Fellows may take unlimited City Vision courses during their terms of service and may choose from any of the courses available.
  •  A list of City Vision courses is available online at http://www.cityvision.edu/cms/cv/courses, and below is a list of courses that may be taken without faith content.
  •  Although City Vision College is a faith-based organization, we do not require TMC Fellows to take courses with faith content. Fellows will have the option of choosing courses with no faith content. If a TMC Fellow indicates that they do not want to participate in any faith content, they will be directed to a list of courses without faith content and their class professor will be notified not to reference faith-related topics when interacting with that particular student.
  • City Vision College is accredited, and classes taken may count toward a bachelor’s degree. Some courses may also provide graduate level credit.
  •  If a TMC Member wants his/her City Vision classes to count toward a degree, he/she must provide an official transcript before beginning the class. Otherwise, a transcript is not needed.

TIMING

  • City Vision classes are 8 weeks in length and require approximately 10-15 hours/week of study time.
  • TMC Fellows may not count class or homework time as AmeriCorps hours, but they may log the hours under “Unrestricted Non-AmeriCorps Time” on their timesheets if their Supervisor allows it.
  •  TMC Fellows may take their chosen courses whenever they are offered during their term of service; however, they are encouraged to take at least one course toward the beginning of their term so as to provide maximum benefit to themselves and their Service Site during their term of service.
  • TMC Fellows may take a class that extends beyond the end of their term of service as long as the class begins during their term of service.

TUITION

  • TMC Fellows receive free registration with City Vision College (a $25 value).
  • TMC Fellows receive 50% off the normal tuition price of the first course taken during their AmeriCorps term. (Normal tuition is currently $500/class.) Fellows then receive FREE tuition on all additional courses taken during their term. (As with any student who takes a free course through City Vision College, the Fellow must complete the course with a passing grade (C or above) or else they will be charged in full for the course.)
  • TMC Fellows are responsible for purchasing any required course materials/books.
  • TMC Fellows may use their AmeriCorps Education Award to pay for City Vision classes; therefore payment for classes may be deferred until receipt of the Education Award at the end of the Member’s successfully completed term.
  • If a TMC Fellow does not receive an Education Award (due to early exit or failure to complete member requirements), the member is responsible for paying the balance owed to City Vision College upon his or her exit from the TMC program, as would be the case with any school bill.
