Good Works' INTERNSHIPS

The community of Good Works, Inc. offers paid internships that are an outlet for Christians looking to put their faith into action and to heed the radical call of Jesus to take up their cross and follow him. Interns will encounter a wide range of experiences and ministries, including at least eight different contexts for service opportunities and leadership development. Good Works welcomes interns into and alongside of the seasoned staff in order to give and receive, disciple and be discipled. Good Works consists of 15 full-time staff members and over 1000 volunteers every year; interns are a vital aspect of this community.

Heading into its 28th year and located in Athens, Ohio, it is the vision of Good Works to create a loving COMMUNITY OF HOPE where the homeless, the poor, and at-risk children and widows (Job29:12-17) of Appalachian Ohio, one of the poorest regions of the country, can sense God's love and presence through us.

It is the intention of Good Works to improve the quality of life through meeting felt needs, building and promoting trust, strengthening human dignity, providing and promoting education, providing employment opportunities and encouraging feelings of self-worth. We take seriously the words of Christ that "whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me" (Matt. 25:40). It is our intention to proclaim and live out the Incarnation of Christ in the world around us.

Since the late 1980's, Good Works has been providing both academic and non-academic internship opportunities lasting for a week, a summer, or a year. Our goal is to provide a context for discipleship to take place, educate people about the issues surrounding service to the poor and oppressed and to develop godly servant-leaders who can carry the commands of Jesus to a lost and hurting society (See Matthew 9:35-38).

While each church's path to ministry is unique, we can learn from one another. The following stories highlight the experiences of other churches that have ventured out in holistic mission. As these stories illustrate, there is no one template for the holistic church, no one "right" way to do ministry.

Introducing the Ministry Journey

Introducing the ministry journey

Your church can proclaim the Good News, comfort the afficted, build up the cities, and repair the cyclic devastations of broken communities. If you are willing in obedience and trust to take the first small step and then the next and the next God will take care of the big picture. (Churches That Make a Difference, page 314)

Coping with Conflict

COPING WITH CONFLICT

Jesus warned his followers to expect conflict: “Do not think that I have come to bring
peace on earth” (Matt. 10:34–36) If holistic ministry were not controversial, more churches
would already be doing it! Risks and change will inevitably “threaten those individuals within
the congregation who had a deep commitment to and vested interest in the existing
programs and priorities,” warns Leading Congregational Change. Sit in on a meeting of
elders or deacons, church staff, or the congregation-at-large in the process of considering
a shift to holistic ministry, and watch the sparks fly. Sparks? Sometimes it’s more like
missiles hurled at opponents.

Dealing with Fears: Counting the Cost, Looking for Treasure

Dealing with Fears: Counting the Cost, Looking for Treasure

As a church considers a call to holistic ministry, people will want to assess the price
tag. Some in the congregation will focus on the risks associated with any new endeavor:
to your membership, budget, personnel, property, facilities, or reputation. Leaders should
not ignore these concerns. Rather, leaders should heed Jesus’ warning and count the
costs:
