A Tale of Two Volunteers: Willy and Sharon's Story

Once upon a time, a couple from Singapore connected with a community center in Uganda through a website based in America—ready to change the lives of hundreds of people in Africa.


Willy and Sharon Ong arrived at Kitega community centre on beautiful Saturday in June 2009.  The young couple spent about a month in the Ugandan village, doing everything from teaching and engineering to social work and organizational assistance.

Day in and day out, I pass the younger versions of ourselves, trying to create an identity out of looking like the latest fashion icon (within their financial portfolio), behaving in the manner of whoever the "It Girl" is at this current moment.  And striving to be known for being themselves while taking on the attributes of whoever is notorious for getting what she wants.

Acceptance

I want you to ponder that verse for just a moment. We belong to God, we are HIS treasure, and we are to obey all that He tells us to do. How much comfort does that bring to you? God takes us as we are, no matter what shape we are in. So often we are not accepted in society until we reach a certain standard, which is often difficult to attain to, if not downright impossible. But God accepts us as is, no warranty needed. It really bugs me that women are especially held to a physical standard while God accepts us as is. But that is beside the point.
