Rev. Dr. Jimmy Dorrell and Janet Dorrell: Mobilizing Middle Class Christians - The Poverty Simulation: CCDA 2004 Audio

For seventeen years, Mission Waco has been mobilizing hundreds of middle class students and adults toward more compassionate involvement among the poor through its weekend Poverty Simulations and Out-of-Country Exposure trips. This workshop will describe how carefully designed experiences confront many of the myths about the poor during the guided mining. It will also provide both guidelines from building this experiential training from a Christ perspective and other creative initiatives which stretch Christians who want to be more involved in ministry with the marginalized.

Leanne Krueger-Braneky: Economic Development from the Bottom Up: CCDA 2006 Audio

How Local First Campaigns Revitalize Communities:  Research shows that money spent at locally-owned, independent businesses has three times the economic impact of dollars spent at retail chains, yet many economic development plans focus on luring chain stores to struggling neighborhoods.  Learn about a grassroots campaign to keep money in Philadelphia neighborhoods:  Buy Local Philly.

Dr. Bob Lupton: Gentrification with Justice: CCDA 2006 Audio

Gentrification is a new national norm.  Like the rising tide, it cannot be stopped.  Nor should we want to stop it.  We need to harness it for the benefit of the poor.  This workship explores how to do just that.

Josh Kaufman-Horner & Yawo Tekpa: International Liberty and Justice For All: CCDA 2006 Audio

This workshop focuses on efforts by Christians to catalyze a global civil rights movement.  Governments who oppress their citizens are the primary human source of injustice on our planet.  Democratic governments often collude with tyrannies by doing the political bidding of unjust corporations who cater to uncaring global consumers.  As a result over two billion people-the poorest of the poor-are impoverished economically and politically by this global system that crushes their development.  Come hear about developing plans for the nonviolent abolition of tyranny, terrorism, war, uncaring

I have endeavoured in this Ghostly little book, to raise the Ghost of an Idea, which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves. ... May it haunt their houses pleasantly, and no one wish to lay it. - Charles Dickens (December, 1843)

Hans Rosling: New Insights on Poverty and Life Around the World: TED 2007 Video

Hans Rosling's 2006 TED talk demonstrated that statistics can be interesting, as well as important. In this year's talk, Rosling lets the GapMinder software roam freely, providing his own running commentary on how developing countries are pulling themselves out of poverty. He also demos Dollar Street, a program that lets you peer in the windows of typical families worldwide living at different income levels. Be sure to watch straight through to the (literally) jaw-dropping finale.

Try out GapMinder for yourself at http://tools.google.com/gapminder/, and see how knowledge can help change the world.

Hans Rosling: Debunking Third-World Myths with the Best Stats You've Ever Seen: TED 2006 Video

Hans Rosling presents...

A presentation on public health, by all expectations, should be boring. This is a problem, since one of the greatest challenges the developing world faces is the lack (or poor use) of development statistics by those who want to help.

In this presentation, Hans Rosling uses lively narration and vivid animation to challenge the West's preconceptions about poverty. Asian countries, as colorful bubbles, float across the grid -- toward better national health and wealth. Animated bell curves representing national income distribution squish and flatten. In Rosling's hands, global trends -- life expectancy, child mortality, poverty rates -- become clear, intuitive and even playful.

A Christmas Story

It was over 20 years ago when Robert was looking forward to Christmas. He was the youngest of seven kids and his mom did not have the extra money to spend on Christmas. Even with seven kids there was always something under the tree. The kids new that Santa would always bring at least one gift. This year Robert, age 7, only had one gift that he wanted. Robert asked for the Speed Racer car the Mach five. Christmas morning Robert was the only child in his family that did not get a gift. He remembers watching for days at the door thinking that there had to be some mistake. After a few days of watching, Robert’s mother called him to the side and explained that Robert was different from his brothers and sisters.

World Vision is a Christian relief and development organization addressing the causes of poverty to help suffering children and their communities around the world.  They serve the poor in need around the world regardless of religion, race, or gender.  The 30-Hour Famine is an international youth movement designed to fight hunger while educating youth about starving children around the world.  It provides youth with a way to make an impact on world hunger and learn about hunger and poverty at the same time.

Prior to your group’s chosen famine dates, youth group members raise money through donors and sponsors to provide help to millions of hurting and undernourished children around the globe.  Groups then get a taste of what hunger is like by fasting for 30 hours.  During these 30 hours, groups are encouraged to participate in activities together, such as community service projects, games, and Bible studies, in order to gain a deeper understanding of hunger and poverty.  How each group spends their 30 hours is flexible and can be tailored to individual groups and communities.

Every couple of months World Vision schedules famine dates.  For a list of upcoming famine dates visit their website at www.30hourfamine.org.  If none of the scheduled dates work with your group’s schedule you can select your own date.  To register visit the 30 hour famine website and select “sign up for a famine now” at the bottom left hand side of the page.  This will bring you to a new screen where you can log in to your account or register your group for a new account.  By registering your group you will gain access to helpful tools to plan your famine.

Once you are registered your will receive a Leader’s Guide that contains ideas for games, service projects, and other activities to do with your youth group during the famine.  You will also receive a devotional to use during the 30 Hour Famine.  Youth participants also receive a Student Guide containing all of the information they need to participate in addition to an envelope for collect donations.  Registering will also allow you to access an online directory of other groups in your area participating in the famine.

The money raised by each group will be used by World Vision to help hurting children around the world.  87% of the money raised goes towards development projects to help children in poverty, with only 13% needed to cover administrative and management costs.  To begin fundraising, it is recommended that each group set a fundraising goal and create a plan to reach that goal.  Some groups decide that each participant will be responsible for raising a specified amount individually while other groups choose to plan group fundraisers such as a car wash or a craft show.  Ideas for fundraising can be found in the leader’s manual.
