Printer-friendly versionSend to friendPDF version

Overall, Fair Trade sounds like a wonderful way to empower those who have been historically exploited by corporations.  This is because Fair Trade allows for these individuals to directly profit from their hardwork; in addition, it also acts as a way to empower them by acknowledging their cultural heritage.  In this sense, the ability to Fair Trade is a reputable one--specifically for those who have been historically and economically disenfranchised .

Though this is the case, not everyone has fair access to knowing the importance of Fair Trade, specifically individuals that live in other impoverished communities.  For this reason, it is important to have material available in impoverished communities about Fair Trade, as well as more explanation as to how Fair Trade can keenly empower an impoverished community by helping out others who have been drastically affected by unfair, corporate-based trading.

One way that the knowledge related to Fair Trade can become accessible is by making it part of a required school-wide curriculum.  This can be accomplished by incorporating relateable teaching strategies in the classroom that shows how fair-trade aids in empowering youth who have been subjegated to child exploitation.  Many sites, including the Fair Trade Certified/Transfair (http://www.transfairusa.org/ website) have a hosts of teaching strategies for all age groups--strategies that can be used to inform all youth of the importance of purchasing products that practice Fair Trade.

Another way to encourage the discussion of Fair Trade is by sponsoring a speaker to and personally discuss how Fair Trade has economically empowered them to succeed financially.  This is because personal narratives are one of the greatest ways to empower a community because it encourages dialogue and personalized discussion.  Overall, speakers would work best in neighborhood block club meetings, as well as in college and university formats.  To get a speaker, the Fair Trade Federation site(http://www.fairtradefederation.org/ht/d/sp/i/212/pid/212) is a great place to sign up for one.

To demonstrate just how accessible and relateable the Fair Trade topic is, it is also important to advertise employment opportunities with Fair Trade based organizations.  This is the most powerful way to empower a stronger connection with urban-based communities, since it can tentatively offer employment opportunities to an audience that is unfamiliar with Fair Trade.  These advertising efforts should not only be available through Fair Trade-based websites, it should also be easily accessible through minority based publications and online resources.

Fair Trade is a wonderful way to empower all communities--but this empowerment depends on making the knowledge about it more accessible to all citizens.  Though these are some ways we can all work together to make this a reality, I am sure there are other ways as well.  Thus, please feel free to touch base with me if you have any other ideas related to this topic.
