Social Justice Just a Trend?

Printer-friendly versionPDF version

For anyone working with the impoverished a common theme will continue to spring up.  Injustice.  There is a trend surfacing today among 16-29 year olds who want to fight social injustices.  These could be anything from poverty, homelessness, AIDs/HIV, teen pregnancy, racism or any number of "evils" in this world.

To me, and I would assume to most in our generation, it's easy to preach against the evils of poverty and homelessness.  Then when we are set to retire for the day we'll go and get on our macbooks, watch some cable, take a hot shower and unplug from all that we deem is an injustice.  When we wake the next morning, after sipping some hot coffee, we'll be at it again.

My question to our generation is this:  What is radical about our life?  What is convicting about our faith?  At what point do we believe in a cause so much that we are willing not to die for it, but to live for it?  What is that cause for you?  For me?

Don't get me wrong, please do something.  I understand there are different levels that people are at when it comes to striving for social justice.  I understand it is a win for some people serve at a soup kitchen once a year.  I understand a win would be looking someone who is homeless in the eye and genuinely showing some compassion.  However, I do believe there is a vast majority of people who are convicted and burdened to see change but are unwilling to put forth the constant and exhausting effort to see that change come about.  Where are the Wilberforce's of today?

I read just today that "The fallow ground of the poor would produce much food, but it is swept away through injustice." (Prov. 13 ESV)  I wonder what injustice the wise man was talking about.  To me I side with Edmund Burke in saying "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
