SixSeeds.org: Domestic Projects: **Find a local project for your family**
The Story:
There are an increasing number of web based databases that can help you locate a project suitable for your family. These are not SixSeeds Partner projects so we cannot vouch for any opportunity listed on these sites. Please investigate on your own (and let us know what you find!).
NATIONAL:
The Volunteer Family has a very impressive and searchable database. The actual entries are growing, but still tend to be concentrated in a few regions.
Idealist also has a section on its database dedicated to families.
1-800-Volunteer also includes an advanced search function for families in its nationwide database (make sure you click on "advanced search" and scroll down to reach the checkbox).
SF BAY AREA:
Hands on Bay Area is a S.F. Bay Area service site that includes a family friendly search option.
California Volunteers is a site from the Governor's office that provides an extensive collection of options statewide (but there is no easy way to search for family based ones).
BOSTON AREA:
Boston Cares is a Boston area specific site that's not dedicated to families, but nevertheless is updated with general opportunities that may be suitable for your family.
How you can help:
If you find other helpful web resources like these, please contact us and we'll post them here as well.
Idea for your own family:
If your family is new to the idea of serving together, we recommend dipping your toes in at first. Refrain from making a long term committment - first test out how your kids (and you) will do. It may take several trials before you find the right fit.
