CULTURE STUDY GUIDE

  • Begin a study of the subject of culture in a good encyclopedia—see articles on "culture" and "society."
  • Go next to standard anthropology and sociology texts. Read the introductory chapters on "culture."
  • A good understanding of our culture and how it affects young people can be found in chapters 3 and 4 of Hans Sebald’s Adolescence: A Social Psychological Analysis, (3rd ed.).
  • Social critics such as Vance Packard, David Reismann, Peter Berger and Marty Martin provide further analysis of American culture. Neil Postman (The Disappearance Of Childhood) and David Elkind (The Hurried Child and All Grown Up And Nowhere To Go) deal with ways in which American culture negatively affects young people.
  • Take special questions or interests to the Periodical Guide, various indices of social sciences, and to the library card system. In these, one will find further reading about the particular cultural issue of interest.
