A Title Doesn’t Cut It.

I read once an illustration that shared how President Woodrow Wilson had a housekeeper who was always nagging him. Nagging about how she and her husband didn’t have more prestigious positions in life. One day she had approached the President after hearing that the Secretary of Labor had resigned and flat out asked him (the nerve, boldness!!) to appoint her husband. She said something like “my husband is perfect for his vacant position. he is a laboring man, knows what labor is and understands laboring people” (stop laughing).

With that, the President said, I appreciate the recommendation but this is an important position, requiring an influential person. She rebutted with BUT, “if you made him the secretary of labor, he would be an influential person!”

Is the church ready for a multi-ethnic era in America?

Many things can (and will) be said about last night's historic election. Regardless if you felt it was an exciting victory or a crushing defeat, there is one thing we should all be able to agree on: our country has entered a multi-ethnic era. The election of our first African American president (who's biracial background embodies multi-ethnicity) is a powerful sign of how rapidly our society has changed and will change in the decades to come. The question on my mind..."Is the church ready?"

President Obama's First 100 days.

I found a great article recently describing President Obama's recent efforts to expand national service programs. He recently signed a bill that will deliver $1.1 billion to AmeriCorps this year. What does that mean for us? This is going to triple the number of federally sponsered community service volunteers. Another great point was the creation of a $50 million "social innovation fund" that will provide matching grants to non-profits organizations! This is a great step, among many that the President is taking to better the communities across the nation. Progress is a slow process but this seems promising, complimenting the existing organizations that are striving for the same goal.
