Poverty and Homelessness Ongoing Challenges/Strategies

The good news.  The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (www.hud.gov) lastest report indicates a decline in homelessness across the country.  The Planning and Development Network's website asks "if this is too good to be true?"  Why the skepticism?

The unstable economic situation.  The new poor.  The fear that the foreclosure crisis will lead to an increase in homelessness?  For hundreds of years the issues of homelessness and poverty have challenged and drawn Christians to strive for solutions and intervention methods.  Yes, the poor will always be with us, yet for some we can make a difference.  All economic classes and all ethnic groups and races working together to make our communities viable and stable is possible.  That has been proven by the efforts and members of the Christian Community Development Association.

As a Christian, I believe lasting personal change begins with accepting Christ as Lord and Savior.  I also believe that there are systemic reasons for poverty that must continue to be recognized and challenged.

Over the next weeks I will be writing about broad community approaches to poverty and homelessness. I will share how various communities, ministries and social service agencies are addressing these issues using different poverty frameworks and ministry strategies. I hope you will share yours.
