Outside the Walls: A National Snapshot of Community-Based Prisoner Reentry Programs
Produced by the Reentry National Media Outreach Campaign, 2003
Summary:
How can we better equip prisoners for reentry and reintegration into the community? This video identifies and addresses the key issues in reentry and rehabilitation. It profiles 25 well-established and successful reentry programs from around the country.
The programs are organized into six thematic groups according to the services that they provide:
- Employment and Education
- Health
- Housing
- Family
- Public Safety
- The Faith Community
Several profiles are included in each section. The video examines government programs as well as community-based and faith-based programs initiatives of varying sizes.
These programs provide services to offenders both before and immediately after release. Program directors, employees, corrections officials, district attorneys, and other government representatives, in addition to program clients, describe the programs from a variety of perspectives.
Why does FASTEN recommend this resource?
This video is long (2 hrs. 31 min.) but short segments of it may be a useful in volunteer training sessions or to encourage churches to become active in reentry programs by showing stories of success. It may also be helpful to view segments according to one the six themes depending on the mission or interest of the viewers. The segment on Faith may be of particular interest to congregations and FBOs desiring to learn more about and to participate in prisoner rehabilitation programs.
