Youth Leadership Development Workbook: A Guide for Emerging Young Leaders (Published by New Light Leadership Coalition, copyright 2001-2003) Purchase Now! Summary: This comprehensive guide begins with a pre-test for assessing where a youth is in the leadership development process, as well as a helpful introduction to the idea of leadership. The workbook conceives of growth in leadership as progress in three arenas: knowing oneself (personal development); learning about others and the world around one (social and educational development); and using one’s resources effectively (economic, political, technological and organizational development). The book’s eight chapters each contain readings, activities and worksheets, questions for self-reflection, and suggested books for further reading. Some lessons focus on developing specific leadership skills (e.g., problem solving, public speaking, and entrepreneurship). The workbook can be used individually, or by a youth leader working with a small group of teens. Though New Light Leadership Coalition does not refer to itself as faith-based, its approach is influenced by the Nation of Islam and many of its resources are directed especially toward African-American students. Why does FASTEN recommend this resource? This guide covers useful topics not always present in other youth leadership development programs, such as training in becoming politically active and lessons on developing technological skills. It specifically addresses the need of many minority youth to grow in self-confidence and inner strength. A "self-study" tool for leadership development, it is particularly appropriate for youth who do not have access to a mentor. Written by youth and for youth, it is practical, easy to read and understand, and sensitive to the insecurities and inhibitions many youth face. |
