Losing His Religion?

Jimmy Carter, the nation’s 39th President who aspired to make Government ‘competent and compassionate’ made the decision to leave the Southern Baptist Church due to its discrimination against women and girls and its ‘twisted interpretation of the word of God.’

More Foundations providing “Safety Net” funding to nonprofits

While the federal government American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding flounders and states pull back funding for essential services foundations are stepping up “Safety Net” grants to help with the services most critical in our economic times. Namely, job training, meals programs, homeless assistance, literacy and education initiatives, and other services targeting the poorest families.

From Vision To Provision - Write It Down And Make It Plain

As a grant writer and administrator for several charities, I find the most critical thing to remember is that we must take time to write our vision out and make it plain, so others can read it and run with it.

Do you remember God’s words to Habakkuk in chapter 2 of the same book in the Bible:

I will stand my watch,
And set myself on the rampart,
And watch to see what He will say to me,
And what I will answer when I am corrected.
Then the Lord answered me and said:

“Write the vision,
And make it plain on tablets,
That he may run who reads it
For the vision is yet for an appointed time:
Though It tarries, wait for it:
Because it will surely come, It will not tarry.

Maps for websites

Maps have come a long way in terms of looks and services. A few years ago, web designers used static maps to display their location. These maps were taken from screen shots, scanned images, photos etc… With static maps, only a picture of the map was visible, and visitors had to figure out their way by deciphering the intersections that were captured in the map image.
Now we have highly dynamic and visually dazzling maps. Visitors can punch in their address and are shown driving directions to a given location. Various way points can be indexed, and users can zoom in and out to a recognizable view.

The Thief

One of my favorite Bible verses is John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

For the most part I have always focused on the second half of the verse. I have always been attracted to the idea of abundant life.

Last Friday I began to reflect on the first half of the verse.

Let me explain why.

Usually I drive our car to the office. Last Friday, Rita needed the car, so I drove the truck. When I got to the office, I parked it in the church parking lot. Two hours later, it was gone – stolen. This is the third time in the last 36 months that the truck has been stolen. You would think that I would be used to this by now.

Transsexual Prostitutes

I spent the past week writing the story of my previous experience in Hollywood with the Broken Hearts ministry, thinking through stories I heard, pondering what God wants our church to hear through this, considering how best to explain what happens each week and how to word it well. After several days of thinking, I was finally able to put my ideas on paper (which resulted in the prior post).

four years later, this is still true

“Implicit in the ecstatic visions of Web 2.0 is the hegemony of the amateur. I for one can’t imagine anything more frightening.”

I, too, could never buy into the hype of “wikinomics.” Free has its benefits, but it can’t replace quality. I will miss the newspapers when they go.

there aren’t a lot of things that really make me angry

But the widespread misrepresentation of the AmeriCorps expansion among Christians and conservatives is one of them. Here’s an excellent FAQ that sets the record straight.

No, public service is not mandatory. No, it is not re-education. No, it does not mean people are being paid to “volunteer.” Unpaid volunteers could never accomplish what AmeriCorps interns do - national service is a full time job. And, finally, AmeriCorps interns aren’t restricted from attending church. In fact, as my organization proves, you can serve your country at a faith-based program, as long as you don’t participate in sectarian activity on the government’s dime.
