SF Chronicle: Park nomad, laptop in tow, calls bushes home

The San Francisco Chronicle recently published a really interesting article about Tom Sepa - a man who wouldn't fit into the average person's idea of a homeless individual. Tom lives in a local park, but works from his laptop as a telemarketer. Pretty creative! If you've ever been on a CSM trip - you know one of our goals is to challenge your perception of what you think homeless people are like. We hope to not only put a face  on what to many may only be a statistic - but to also introduce you to some amazing friends!

San Fran Bay Area Reflection: Bingo, Manicures & Papusa

Serving Jesus in the Bay Area

I spent the past week in San Francisco with a group from my church serving with an organization called CSM (Center for Student Missions). It was quite enjoyable. The end. Haha, but seriously, it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life and I am so thankful that I had such a wonderful opportunity to serve others. The trip truly opened my eyes (both physically and spiritually) to a whole new world and I can't lie, I love it! San Francisco is a very unique city, and we were very fortunate to experience it in a way most people don't get a chance to. We were also very lucky with CSM; the staff and particularly our leader McKenzie were so filled with faith and shared our goals on this trip. Below is a day by day description of our ministry in the city...

Will Your Church Step Outside for Hands Across the Cities?

History will be made on Sunday, October 12, 2008 as churches unite with one voice, one stand and one song for a healing of the

land.  Called “Hands Across the Cities”, this unique stand against violence and for healing was birthed originally as ‘Hands

Across Mountain Blvd’, but the vision was enlarged a few weeks ago to include all of Oakland and is catching on in cities all over

the place. “It’s like wildfire, according to Elder Teirrah McNair, an evangelist at Abundant Life Christian Center Fellowship. So many

To Escape Gangs and Violence, Kids Often Turn to Sports

So many young lives have been taken way too early because of gang violence. Urban centers throughout North America have become home of thousands of gangs (Los Angeles County is home to more than 150,000 gang members LA Almanac, 2002). Sports Illustrated recently wrote an article about how many kids are looking for escape routes - sports being one of those. These alternatives provide a sense of community that many youth seek. Please pray that more kids would find shelter in local churches, sports and other safe havens.
