What They Do: Community development, casework, communication center, relief coordination, referrals to social service agencies

Brief Description: 

Texas Interfaith Disaster Response seeks to coordinate emergency and long-term recovery efforts among a variety of faith-based organizations, government agencies, and private businesses.  The group meets weekly and involves numerous agencies from across the city, facilitating communication, information exchange, and helping to avoid duplication of services.  Their Communication Center serves as a vital link between evacuees and community agencies working to assist them.  In addition, the Communication Center has trained and mobilized 250 volunteer chaplains to provide emotional and spiritual care to evacuee families.

Pine Island Long Term Recovery Relief Organization (Bokeelia, FL)

Who They Serve: Residents of greater Pine Island who are in need of home repairs due to hurricane damage

What They Do: Housing redevelopment, housing repairs, assistance with filing appropriate paperwork, referrals to other social service agencies

Brief Description:

Pine Island Long Term Recovery has recruited donations and mobilized over 400 volunteers to help repair and rebuild damaged homes.  Over 1,000 individuals have been served since 2004 (454 in the past 12 months).  They work closely with Centro Campesino to serve migrant workers who have lost their homes as well as with FEMA, Red Cross, local government, businesses and the Conrad Hilton Foundation.

Fresh Ministries’ Women to the Rescue (Jacksonville, FL)

Who They Serve: Katrina evacuees resettling in Jacksonville, Florida

What they do: Financial literacy training, financial assistance, referrals to social service agencies, resettlement of hurricane evacuees, transportation, food, job assistance, Individual Development Accounts

Brief Description:

Fresh Ministries’ Women to the Rescue Relief Project has mobilized roughly 150 volunteers to serve as resettlement teams to assist Hurricane Katrina evacuees resettling in Jacksonville.  The program is helping evacuees save to purchase a new home by offering Individual Development Accounts with a 2 for 1 match (for every $1 they save for a new home, the program will put in $2).  In addition, Fresh Ministries has created a virtual warehouse where donors can post information on items they are willing to provide for evacuees such as furniture and appliances.
