Summary:

Developed by Straight Ahead Ministries, a faith-based organization with extensive experience in ministering to teens involved with the juvenile justice system, this manual provides six hours of volunteer training.  It is designed to train two types of volunteers:  those who will lead Bible discussion groups for teens who are currently in juvenile facilities and those who will be in mentoring relationships with teens following their release.  The training begins with a joint session for both groups of volunteers, providing an orientation to juvenile justice ministry.  Following this joint session, the volunteers are divided into separate groups where they receive instruction about how to effectively lead a Bible discussion group or have a successful mentoring relationship.  The manual includes not only the instructor’s guide, but also includes a reproducible participant’s manual.

Why does FASTEN recommend this resource?

This manual was developed as part of Straight Ahead Ministries’ mission to see Christ transform the lives of juvenile offenders across the nation.  Other organizations can benefit from Straight Ahead’s experience in ministering to this population by utilizing this training manual in their own ministries to juvenile offenders.  Scripturally-based principles and practical instruction are combined in this manual, making it a terrific resource for churches and ministries with a heart for troubled teens.
