Mission Statement

Our Mission is to facilitate obedience to the Great Commission by the Body of Christ.

Description

The Mission Society was founded in 1984 by a group of United Methodist clergy, laity and missiologists who felt compelled by God to create a new mission agency of Wesleyan roots. The new agency would expand the mission outreach of local United Methodist churches and would join the worldwide Body of Christ in proclaiming the name of Jesus around the globe.

The primary emphasis of The Mission Society at its inception was to send missionaries to areas where the Gospel had been least heard, to introduce individuals to Christ, plant churches, and train national leaders to carry on the ministries with which they were involved. This same focus continues to guide the organization more than twenty years later as we seek to create self-reproducing, indigenous, discipling, Christian communities by mobilizing cross-cultural witnesses for Christ in partnership with nationals.

Over the years The Mission Society has grown to recruit, train and support over 419 missionaries to 33 countries, and five continents. God has blessed us with amazing servants that have surrendered their lives to minister in His name. We currently have 208 missionaries in 31 countries around the world working in a variety of ministries that seek to both spread the Gospel of Christ and aid in community development and relief efforts where needed.

Formed as a ?faith-based? organization, The Mission Society does not receive denominational funding and works with a variety of Wesleyan evangelical denominations both within the United States and in other parts of the world. As the center of Christendom shifts and globalization alters the world in which we live, The Mission Society continues to grow and transform to minister effectively in this evolving context.

God has created each of us for the common purpose of glorifying Him through loving those around us in the unique ways we are designed to contribute. The more we love God, the more we reflect His loving image back to those around us and help to usher them into His presence. Whatever your gifts, the Kingdom awaits your offering ? It is this for which you were created.

Organizational Statement of Faith

The doctrinal commitments of The Mission Society are those of the historic, evangelical Wesleyan standards as set forth in the Articles of Religion, The Confession of Faith and the General Rules of the United Methodist Church Discipline.

We affirm that there is only one Savior and only one Gospel. Jesus Christ being Himself the only human incarnation of God, who gave Himself as the only ransom for sinners, is the only mediator between God and humanity. All persons are perishing because of sin, but God loves all, not wishing that any should perish but that all should repent. To proclaim Jesus as ?the Savior of the world? is not to affirm that all persons are either automatically or ultimately saved, still less to affirm that all religions offer salvation in Christ. Rather, it is to proclaim God?s love for a world of sinners and to invite all persons to respond to Him as Savior and Lord in the wholehearted commitment of repentance and faith.

To evangelize is to spread the Good News that Jesus Christ died for our sins and was raised from the dead according to the Scriptures and that as the reigning Lord, He now offers forgiveness of sins and the liberating gift of the Spirit to all who repent and believe. Our Christian presence in the world is indispensable to evangelism. Evangelism is the proclamation of the historical, biblical Christ as Savior and Lord, with a view to persuading people to come to Him personally and so be reconciled to God.

We affirm that Christ sends His redeemed people into the world as the Father sent Him. Evangelism is carried forward with the expectation that people everywhere shall come under the Lordship of Jesus Christ and is, therefore, a distinctive purpose of mission. Beyond this, we affirm the need for wholeness in persons and in society and recognize this also as a goal for mission. The church, as the community of God?s people, must not be identified with any particular culture, social or political system, or human ideology.

Membership in The Mission Society should be open to all members of the body of Christ who are committed to the Purpose and Statements of Faith and Mission as found in the foregoing statements.
