Mission Statement

Identity and Mission of L'Arche

Doug and Willie Cooking at the Activity Center

We are people with and without intellectual disabilities sharing life in communities belonging to an International Federation.

Mutual relationships and trust in God are at the heart of our journey together.  We celebrate the unique value of every person and recognize our need of one another.

The Mission of L'Arche is to:

  • Make known the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities, revealed through mutually transforming relationships.

  • Foster an environment in communities that responds to the changing needs of members, while being faithful to the core values of our founding story.

  • Engage in our diverse cultures, working together

         toward a more human society.

Description

What Is L'Arche?

L'Arche Philosophy

(In regards to lifestyle and relationships)

L'Arche is a lifestyle and not a job, although there is work that needs to be done. We put our emphasis on mutual relationships and being with people, rather than just doing things for people.

We try to live together as brothers and sisters and to share our lives with each other. We recognize that we all have our own disabilities and weaknesses. Therefore, we avoid the attitude of client/staff. In sharing our lives we learn that each of us has his/her own gifts.

Ecumenical Nature of L'Arche

L'Arche is an ecumenical community. As a community, we attend many different churches and have varied religious traditions. We celebrate the aspects of our spirituality that we have in common and try to be respectful of each others differences. We try to live our own tradition well and bring that richness to the whole community.
